Obtaining a x255 stack

There are various methods of obtaining a x255 item stack in Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow.

Red/Blue

Old man glitch

Variant 1:

  1. Have a Potion x1 in item 6.
  2. Encounter a MissingNo. or 'M (00) via the old man glitch.
  3. Potion x1 will become Potion x129. Use up two Potions, taking damage from MissingNo.'s/'M (00)'s attacks if necessary, to get x127.
  4. Throw a Poké Ball to successfully catch MissingNo./'M (00); and add 128 to x127, resulting in a stack of x255 items.
  5. Release the MissingNo./'M (00) if the player doesn't want to keep it.

Variant 2:

  1. Have a non-key item x1 in item 6.
  2. Encounter a MissingNo. or 'M (00) via the old man glitch.
  3. The item will become (item) x129.
  4. Run and toss two of the item to get x127
  5. Encounter MissingNo./'M (00) again to get x255

Trainer escape glitch

Manage the item in slot 6 the same as above, but instead encounter MissingNo. via Trainer escape glitch's Special stat encounter (from Trainers such as Misty's Starmie or a Transformed enemy Ditto) or (luck-based) chain of predefined in-game trade encounters (see the article for more information).

SRAM glitch

Perform the SRAM glitch then swap Pokémon 2 with Pokémon 10, to get the expanded inventory. This skips having to use dry underflow glitch to access the expanded inventory, and both x255 and x0 (x256) quantities will be here already.

Viridian Forest 0xF8FF glitch

The 0xF8FF glitch results in glitch meta-map script activation. It may require an accurate emulator as it involves precise CPU timing. Some luck is also involved. As it leads to arbitrary code execution, it is therefore at least on paper possible to obtain the expanded inventory, and hence x255 stacks.

Yellow

Trainer escape glitch

Variant 1: Encounter Fossil/Ghost MissingNo. with the Special stats 182, 183 or 184 from either a transformed Ditto or (luck-based) chain of predefined in-game trade encounters and work from the steps above.

Variant 2: Clear the save file, and do the steps for Stable unstable MissingNo. on accurate hardware/with an accurate emulator i.e. more accurate than old versions of VisualBoyAdvance, then work from the steps above.

SRAM glitch

Pikachu off-screen glitch arbitrary code execution

This is another glitch which lets the player obtain the expanded inventory more directly, without the player having to use item duplication glitch for a x255 item.

Corrupted mart (text-box ID matching)

This is a method that can be using near the beginning of the game, where a corrupted mart can result in a corrupted bag, and access to x255 stacks, albeit with luck manipulation involved.
