Bulbapedia also has an article about Walk through walls glitch (ledge method).

The first report of this glitch seems to trace back to the old French board Trusteight (which later became PRAMA Initiative) by Snowsnake.

Requirements

  • Must be able and know how to do the Safari Zone exit glitch (also known as the "Glitch City" glitch).
  • Pokémon with high HP or a lot of potions (preferably both).
  • At least one poisoned Pokémon.

Procedure

  1. Get all the Pokémon in the party poisoned or fainted. (It helps if the player only has one Pokémon in the party)
  2. Enter the Safari Zone gate, pay and enter.
  3. Exit the Safari Zone, but answer NO to the "Leaving early ?" message.
  4. Don't move, save and reset.
  5. Immediately after resuming, exit the Safari Zone, walk down until the guy prompts you with the welcome dialogue. Say no, and exit.
  6. The 500th Safari Zone step has to be on a ledge.
  7. If performed correctly, there should be some "9" under the player, instead of the shadow. Skip the dialog.
  8. The player should be in the Safari Zone entrance building, and will be able to the walk through walls.
  9. Walk around until all of the player's Pokémon faints (The game will crash if the player tries to leave through the door).
  10. The player is now at the last Pokémon Center visited/home and will have the ability to walk through walls.

Walk around with only fainted Pokémon glitch method

An alternate method is possible in Pokémon Red and Blue by exploiting the walk around with only fainted Pokémon glitch. It is slightly faster (you don't need to repeatedly heal your Pokémon), slightly easier (you don't need a poisoned Pokémon, but a fainted Pokémon, which is easier to obtain) and you don't need to count your steps.

  1. Get at least one fainted Pokémon in your party.
  2. Enter the Safari Zone gate, pay and enter.
  3. Walk around until you have nearly 33 steps (32 should be perfect) remaining.
  4. Immediately after resuming, exit the Safari Zone, but answer NO to the "Leaving early ?" message.
  5. Don't move, save and reset.
  6. IMPORTANT : Go in straight lines, as the step count is very tight.
  7. Exit the Safari Zone, walk down until the guy prompts you with the welcome dialogue. Say no, and exit.
  8. Fly to Vermilion City (Fuchsia City is also possible if you exited with more than ~37 steps)
  9. Enter the Pokémon Center, go to the PC in straight lines.
  10. Deposit every non-fainted Pokémon.
  11. Save and reset.
  12. Walk three steps left, save and reset.
  13. Walk three other steps left, save and reset.
  14. Walk three last steps left, save and reset.
  15. Walk three steps down, exit the building, save and reset (for safety).
  16. When outside, walk (save and reset if needed) and your last step before you are warped to the Safari Zone gate should be on a ledge. (If you left the Safari Zone with 33 steps remaining, you should walk left once, then down onto the ledge)
  17. If performed correctly, there should be some "9" under the player, instead of the shadow. Skip the dialog.
  18. Once in the Safari Zone gate, the player can walk through walls. Walk four steps (preferably down).
WARNING ! Going out of bounds will cause a crash, and entering the Safari Zone again will cancel the walk through walls. On Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console, erased save data from out of bounds freezes are more common.

Expanded bag method

See also: Expanded bag item documentation (Generation I)

This glitch involves performing one of the normal procedures but instead of obtaining a poisoned Pokémon or a fainted one, the player manipulates the expanded inventory to escape with walk through walls active. The easiest way is possibly to change the quantity of item 37 (wCurMapTileset) to 0, allowing the player to Fly away from the Safari Zone gate with the walk through walls effect active. Another method might involve changing one of the map connections to a different map than map 0xFF (the default map out of bounds for maps with no valid map connections), so that the player can walk to the desired map.
