Pokémon cloning refers to natural glitches which allow the player to keep two copies of the exact same Pokémon. There are two known methods to do this in Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow.
This method was documented by Paco81. It is very risky and the save file could be destroyed if the timing when resetting is bad, but works.
- Save the game in front of a Pokémon Center's PC.
- Deposit a Pokémon into the Pokémon Storage System.
- Attempt to save the game, but reset the game as soon as the Yes/No box disappears in "Would you like to SAVE the game?" without the text updating.
- If done correctly, the player will have the same Pokémon in the party and storage system.
Cable Club method
- Two cartridges that are both Pokémon Red, Blue, or Yellow Version.
- The Pokémon to be cloned.
- A Pokémon to be lost during the process (not on same game as the one to be cloned).
- Link the two games and go to a Pokémon Center.
- Go to the Cable Club and enter the Trade Center.
- On one game, trade the Pokémon to be cloned, and on the other, trade the one to be deleted.
- On the game originally having the Pokémon to be cloned, reset the game without saving. On the game where that Pokémon now resides, save.
The Pokémon to be cloned should now exist on both games, and the other Pokémon should be overwritten by one of the clones.
How it works
Simply because the game was not saved after the later deleted Pokémon was obtained, the save data still says that the player has the cloned Pokémon. On the other game, it was saved with the cloned Pokémon on it, so then both games have the same Pokémon.
